Broccoli Kootu

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

I had this at a friend's place recently.. I dint know broccoli could be cooked as kootu :).. I loved the kootu.. As we were talking stories and then played the game Taboo.. I forgot to get the recipe from her. But I wanted to try it right away, so I made it my way..

Ingredients:
Broccoli - a bunch
Moong Dal - 2 hands
Coconut - 1/4 cup
Cumin seeds - 1 spoon
Sambar powder - 1/2 spoon
Mustard seeds
Urad dal
Tumeric powder - a pinch
Salt
Curry leaves

Method:
1. Boil the moong dal in water along with turmeric powder... when its about cooked, add the cut broccoli and let it boil
2. Make a paste of the coconut and cumin seeds with little water and keep aside
3. When the dal mixture is cooked(this happens very fast with broccoli).. add sambar powder, salt and the coconut paste
4. Separately heat oil and splutter mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves and add to the kootu

Note: 1. You can avoid the coconut paste and make just with the dal too
2. You can add onions along with broccoli
